What is Bollywood? Most of the people consider it to be Indian cinema. But on the contrary, it is not. Indian cinema consists of films produced in various languages across India and Bollywood is just a subset of it, that caters the Hindi speaking population.

Through this post I would like to break some stereotypes about Bollywood. People still think that Bollywood movies are made of boring scripts, weird dance moves and lots of songs. But these are the things of the past now. In recent times, Bollywood has produced movies that have featured in IMDB’s top 250, to name a few- Dangal, 3 idiotsMunna Bhai M.B.B.SChak de! India and PK. Bollywood movies are not only tasting commercial success worldwide but are also getting critically acclaimed. Bollywood movies have attracted famous Hollywood celebrities to play a cameo in them. Some of the famous celebrities that have featured in Bollywood movies are – Sylvester Stallone, Snoop DoggDenise Richards and Kylie Minogue.

Priyanka Chopra

Bollywood actors and actresses are not far behind. Priyanka Chopra who is a former Miss World and a famous Indian actress is taking Hollywood by storm. She is currently the leading actress of the famous T.V. show Quantico and will be seen in the upcoming Hollywood movie Baywatch. Another famous Indian actress, Deepika Padukone starred in XXX: The Return of Xander CageIrrfan Khan has been featured in a lot of Hollywood movies like – Slumdog Millionaire, InfernoThe Namesake, Jurassic World and The Amazing Spider-Man

Bollywood has grown immensely over the past years and has gained recognition worldwide by providing inventiveness, entertainment and creativity to the masses. It has proven to reflect India’s talent and capabilities in terms of entertainment as well. So, Bollywood is just an aspect of Indian cinema, however, a very integral one. 1. Hey Saumay, this was really interesting to read. I’m just wondering if you would consider Slumdog Millionaire to be a Bollywood film, because I feel as though Hollywood considers this to be a Bollywood film simply because it is set in India. Interested to hear your thoughts.

    1. Hi Hilary, Slumdog Millionaire is not a Bollywood film, althought the location of shooting was India and a lot of Bollywood actors acted in it, it was still produced and distributed by Amercian companies.

  2. Wow, I knew that Bollywood was big, but I had no idea there was as much crossover between Bollywood/Hollywood productions as there is! I really appreciated this post!

  3. Amazing. It’s so funny, growing up in Nigeria i watched countless Bollywood movies especially the ones that had no hollywood connection whatsoever. I always thought i’d end up marrying Shah Rukh Khan! So sad it never happened 🙁
I believe Bollywood has more impact than people understand.
    Great Job Saumay!

  4. Before this post I was a part of the most people who think that Bollywood is the Indian cinema. Good to have a chance to broaden your horizons.

  5. I watched 3 Idiots and I love it. I still listen to Zoobi Doobi. What you have shared about Bollywood is very informative. I will follow your blog to learn more about India. By the way, I have to say that I am a big fan of Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

    1. Well not all are based on true stories, but in recent times bollywood is making movies based on true events.
